EVI™

Flexible evacuation analysis for ships

EVI™ is a pedestrian dynamics software tool designed specifically for application within the ship design spiral. First released in 2002, EVI™ has a long history of supporting designers and shipyards in analysing ship evacuation procedures and in understanding the effect of ship layout on evacuation times and highlighting areas of congestion.

EVI™ enables rapid modelling of environments, with prebuilt demographics for standard IMO Day and Night cases making it simpler to evaluate ship designs against regulatory requirements. The software generates visual simulation outputs that are intuitive to interpret, along with detailed numerical results presented in graphs and tables for comprehensive analysis.

EVI software user interface

At a Glance

  • 25+ years in operation
  • 100s of ship layouts analysed
  • Integrated IMO Day and Night case demographics
  • Rapid modelling of ship General Arrangements (GA)
  • Flexible capabilities for a wide range of pedestrian dynamic problems
  • Applications: Evacuation analysis, risk analysis, passenger turnaround optimisation at ports, and shipyard dock studies

IMO Regulatory Rules

IMO rules for evacuation analysis, which initially applied only to Ro-Pax ships, now cover all passenger ships carrying more than 36 people and with keels laid on or after January 2020. Shipyards and designers must demonstrate compliance with IMO performance standards for evacuation, including muster and abandonment times.

The defined performance standards are:

  • 60 minutes for Ro-Pax ships or vessels with three main vertical zones or fewer.
  • 80 minutes for vessels with more than three main vertical zones.

EVI™ simplifies this process, ensuring designs meet the required standards efficiently and effectively.

Beyond Evacuation

EVI™ extends beyond evacuation analysis. Its flexible scripting interface allows precise control over simulations, including custom agent behaviours and objectives. This adaptability has been used to optimise port layouts, analyse ship disembarkation, and improve the efficiency of dock and shift patterns during shipbuilding.

Benefits and Features

  • IMO Compliant: Fully aligned with the latest IMO regulations on passenger ship evacuation (MSC.1/Circ.1533).
  • Semi-Continuous Space Modelling: Offers precise layout definition without spatial approximation typical of grid-based solutions.
  • Rapid Modelling: The companion software, EVE™, makes modelling large, complex vessels fast and is user-friendly.
  • Flexibility: Custom scripting supports the simulation of any passenger or crew scenario.
  • Preloaded IMO Distributions: Includes Day and Night case demographics with options for customisation.
  • Batch Running: Execute multiple simulations effortlessly to calculate 95th percentile evacuation times.
  • 3D Visualisation: Simulations are fully viewable in 3D, with exploded deck views for clear insights into passenger and crew behaviour.
  • Design Support: EVI™ supports every phase of the design spiral, helping optimise layouts for evacuation and analyse various passenger behaviours.

EVI™ is quick and easy to use, and yet its analysis is powerful and flexible. A great solution to evacuation analysis.
