Evacuation Analysis
The main purpose of an evacuation analysis is to verify that a specific ship design will enable people onboard to reach assembly stations in an orderly and timely manner, estimating the time required to abandon ship.
The Challenge
For passenger ships carrying more than 36 people, with keels laid on or after 1 January 2020, proving adequate evacuation times is mandatory. Shipyards and designers must demonstrate that their designs meet the IMO performance standards for evacuation, which requires:
- 60 minutes for Ro-Pax ships or vessels with three or fewer main vertical zones (MVZ).
- 80 minutes for ships with more than three MVZs.
Achieving compliance requires not only meeting these strict timeframes but also ensuring the design facilitates smooth and safe passenger movement, even under the most challenging of conditions.
The Solution: EVI™
EVI™ is an advanced pedestrian dynamics software tool specifically designed to support evacuation analysis during the ship design spiral. First launched in 2002, EVI™ has been a trusted tool for shipyards and designers, helping them:
- Analyse evacuation procedures.
- Understand how ship layout impacts evacuation efficiency.
- Identify areas of potential congestion and improve design accordingly.
Key Features of EVI™
- Comprehensive Outputs: Provides visual simulations for easy interpretation, along with detailed numerical results in graphs and tables for in-depth analysis.
- Rapid Modelling: Quickly model ship environments and apply prebuilt demographics for IMO Day and Night scenarios.
- Intuitive Interface: Streamlined for ease of use, making compliance analysis efficient and straightforward.
By integrating EVI™ into the design process, shipyards can achieve IMO compliance while ensuring passenger safety and operational efficiency.
